Northrop Grumman is seeking a motivated candidate with a strong background in quantum computation to help us architect quantum computing systems.   As part of our group, you will work with a core team of scientists and engineers to make important contributions in the interest of our national defense and security.  We are a collaborative and hard-working team that strives to foster a culture of belonging, mentorship, and personal growth. Northrop Grumman is actively developing architectures for fault-tolerant quantum computation, with a focus on our technology base of superconducting devices and systems. As a senior leader, you will assist in mentoring our more junior staff while also engaging with other subject matter experts on superconducting qubit design and test, classical control electronics, hardware, and software.  You will architect, analyze, and code procedures for fault-tolerant quantum error correction, state distillation, and related primitives.  There are opportunities to contribute and lead in a variety of technical directions from that starting point, including device theory, QCVV, quantum algorithms, and all aspects of quantum computing hardware. As a key contributor, you will assist in mentoring our more junior staff while also helping solve our most difficult architectural problems.  

This position requires work on site located at our Northrop Grumman facility in Linthicum, MD or Aurora, CO location.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering and 12 plus years of relevant professional experience, or Master’s Degree and 14 plus years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong background in fault-tolerant quantum computation and quantum information theory
  • Significant experience with computational methods for analysis and simulation of quantum protocols
  • Programming experience in C++ and Python
  • Proven skill at tackling/solving complex problems
  • Ability to learn new topics quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead in a collaborative, diverse environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with polygraph security clearance (US citizenship is a prerequisite)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Noise-modeling and/or decoherence mechanisms
    • Algorithms, quantum algorithms, and/or theoretical computer science
    • Superconducting qubits or superconducting device physics
  • Experience with Mathematica
  • Active TS/SCI with polygraph security clearance
Salary Range: $234,800 - $352,200
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
