GE Licensing team is hiring for an exciting and fast-paced career in Patent & Technology Licensing. The team focuses on intellectual property (IP) development and monetization related to Video Codec, Wireless Power Transfer, Communication Technologies, Hybrid Electric Vehicle and Charging, Material Science & Chemistry and Power Electronics to name a few. The team also focuses on standards, standards-development organizations (SDOs) engagement, and standard essential patent (SEP) lifecycle management. A successful candidate will be an integral part of a team actively involved in the in the end-to-end technology development and managements of all IP including SEPs.
The open role is a technology and IP-focused position to support critical licensing programs in video codecs (VP9, AV1, VVC, HEVC, etc). The role will bring direct technical, financial and strategic value to GE. This position will also review standards and relevant SEP IP portfolios for communication-related technologies and markets.

Job Description

The role for the GE Licensing Senior Director, is responsible for developing and reducing to practice advanced technologies for Licensing applications. In this role you will be working with research professionals inside and outside GE, potential licensees, standards development organizations, peer companies in the value chain for state-of-the-art Video Codec Technologies, and a cross-functional Licensing team of business leaders, patent and transactional attorneys and financial leaders. The GE Licensing Senior Director, will guide the organization to develop, patent and monetize technologies related, but not limited to, video coding (VP9, AV1, VVC, HEVC, AVS, etc), digital signal processing, & associated electronics to name a few.

At GE Licensing, the engineers are focused and challenged on developing new technologies and delivering state of the art prototypes – which will provide GE Licensing a strong opportunity to patent new inventions and interact at the leadership level with standards development organizations. The Senior Director - Licensing, will grow their capabilities across many technical and commercial areas, while interacting with a wide range of outside organizations. 

GE Licensing has invested heavily in internally-developed and externally-purchased IP assets for many years, and plans to expand this activity going forward.   GE Licensing continues to expand its IP development work across multiple technical areas.  Emphasis will be on growth of new capabilities and partnering across the value chain to progress a wide range of technologies.  The internal ability to rapidly prototype, test and interoperate technologies is critical for the continued growth of GE Licensing.

The role of Senior Director– Licensing, will bring direct financial and strategic value to GE.  The role will lead in building a culture of integrity, while pushing business boundaries & inventing in a business- and IP-driven environment.

  • Shape and drive technology roadmaps, strategy, development, and execution of standard participation in video codec space.  This may require both leadership in new and evolving technology areas as well as partnering with other leaders in relevant disciplines.
  • Guide the commercial teams in Video Codec space to understand the current challenges in the technology development and the direction at which standards are moving in different geographies.
  • Help create and execute a participation strategy to Video Codec standards to enhance the commercial impact of the video codec portfolio owned by GE licensing. Lead the process to present solutions in front of peer organizations internally and at SDO meetings in a very simple, clear manner.
  • Help the commercial team in create/build and monetize impactful IP monetization programs in video codec and other related technologies.
  • Take a strategic role in shaping the organization competencies and technical leadership in and associated component technology areas and work closely Commercial teams in Licensing for successful go to market strategy.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • PhD degree +5 years or MS +10 years from an accredited university or college in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years’ professional work experience in Video Codec related technologies including but not limited to encoders, decoders, systems and networks.
  • Skilled in understanding of the key processes in video compression standards, such as H.261, H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC, HEVC, VVC etc.
  • 2 years’ experience in Building Intellectual Property Strategy connected to Technology Strategy
  • Experience in one or more areas such as video coding (VP9, AV1, VVC, HEVC, AVS), digital signal processing, & associated electronics is desired.
  • Strong problem solving, business and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 20

Desired Characteristics

  • Track record in Innovation and thought leadership in video codec technologies.
  • At least 3 years experience in participating in one or more Video codec standards and ability to understand the future direction of video codec standards
  • 5 years’ experience in developing Technology and Intellectual Property strategy preferred. Experience in Standard essential patents (SEP)
  • Experience in technology, intellectual property analysis and landscape assessment for complex technology or application space or Standard Essential Technologies.  Ability to map technology /innovations to video codec standards is preferred
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and work with minimal supervision in a fast-changing environment
  • Compelling communication (in oral and written form) with the ability to simplify complex matters to the critical few elements for presentation to peers
  • Familiarity with related consumer electronics markets globally a plus

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

The base pay range for this position is $127,100 to $211, 800. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan.  This posting is expected to close on March 29th, 2024.
