Position Summary:
Leads and coordinates a 3–6-person team for Furnace metrology and pyrometry for over 25 furnaces. The lead is knowledgeable on furnace design, refractory, combustion systems, controls, combustion safety, and industry regulations. Subject matter expert for the mechanical and electrical application and knowledge to prepare furnaces for survey and coordinates refractory repairs.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

- Conducts on the job and work instruction training for lower leveled technicians including calibration, temperature uniformity surveys (TUS), system accuracy tests (SAT)
- Audits calibration of all equipment used for calibration
- Conducts weekly or monthly inventory and requests all tools required for operations are available
- Intermediate to advanced programming of Honeywell UDC3200 2500, DR4500, Martel MC1210, MC1010, Land Infrared C100, C160, Fluke 725, and all 50 series. P.I.E. Piecal 422, Fluke 2680A (Data Logger).
- Operates and programs test combustion analyzers, overhauls pilot system, troubleshoots/ inspect furnaces problems. Maintain flame safety system and furnace controls. Conducts and audits calibrations, TUS, and SATS for all furnaces
- Ensure departments performs quarterly calibration on all instrumentation on all furnaces and TUSs/SATs are on schedule
- Ability to conduct combustion adjustments as needed on all furnaces
- Coordinates with Southern California Gas Co. on required and updated training
- Works on special projects to improve the metrology department
- Lead instrumentation, furnace, and combustion technicians
- Supports with planning, directing, and coordination of operations to maximize efficiency in the department. Ensure goals are met and production supported. This includes daily work scheduling for team members
- Reviews and updates of all certifications in the metrology department including confined space training
- Audits and retains all documents submitted by technicians for surveys and test for compliance with industry and company regulations. Responsible for writing of calibration, survey, other similar pyrometry and metrology reports per Shultz Work Instructions, submittal to Plant Engineering and Quality departments for final approval
- Leads and partners cross functionally all new and ongoing projects for the department
- Supports with revision of new forms and procedures required for the department
- Participates and prepare for all audits internally and externally including customer audits
- Uses and updates scheduling software such as Gage Track
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret multiple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Knowledgeable on furnace design, refractory, combustion systems, controls.
- Knowledgeable on furnace combustion, burner tuning, use of gas analyzers for emissions including oxygen content
- Knowledgeable AMS2750, NADCAP
- Knowledgeable on combustion safety, NFPA 86
- Knowledgeable of environmental responsibility for furnace emissions, permit conditions
Experience & Education
- One year certificate from college or technical school; or seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
