About us:

The department of “Satellite Assembly Integration & Test (AIT) and National Programmes” is responsible for the build of projects led from the UK. These projects are nominally from the European Space Agency, such as Biomass or a Mars rover, but we also cover national programmes.

A generic project would see us take delivery of a structure, mechanically install all of the hardware, electrically integrate the hardware, functionally test the hardware and then take that spacecraft to an environmental test facility where we would qualify the design and build against the launch and operational environment. Upfront before the hardware arrives we work with the design team to ensure the design is realistic for AIT as well as all the planning and procedure writing needed for the later stages. The final stage is of course launch where we’ll ship the spacecraft off to a launch site, have it fuelled and final tested, mounted on the rocket and see it on its way.

In work right now we have five spacecraft and one rover at different stages of their lifecycle and four at the bid stage.

Satellite AIT is project based meaning our teams work for long periods together (Five years on a project may be considered quick for some missions), because of this we have a unique role, no day is ever the same as we work towards launching the spacecraft and you can guarantee the next project will be completely different with an abundance of new challenges.

What you will be doing:

Due to our high workload you will be expected to be self-motivating and capable of acting on your own initiative. You will be involved across all our projects helping to promote best practice and lead improvements. This is an ideal opportunity for someone to get a real appreciation of what it takes to build spacecraft, you will regularly be visiting our cleanrooms and interacting with engineers and technicians.

By the end of the internship you will know the details of how we build spacecraft; the planning routines, quality processes and execution systems we use.

With a range of disciplines within Satellite AIT the role will be tailored to your strengths, be that planning mechanical activities, debugging electrical procedures, forecasting workload and capacity or developing new tools.

Our placements give a unique insight into potential career paths within Airbus. They are designed so that you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice and gain crucial industry experience. The skills and knowledge you gain will improve your chances of a future role within the Airbus and should benefit your future studies.

Guidance and supervision will always be available, but you will be given a large degree of freedom and responsibility to develop each project in your own way!

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

*Please  ensure you include your CV and a cover letter for your application to be considered*

While we won’t be letting you crane the satellites around our cleanrooms, we do expect a level of practicality.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Mechanical, Electrical or Software Engineering degrees are favoured.  Any degree with an engineering content would be considered;

  • The ideal candidate will have a passion for making “stuff”, be that physical or virtual, and be able to demonstrate that passion through their hobbies and interests;

  • Google suite or MS Office package;

  • Logically minded and ability to see the critical path within a schedule;

  • Problem solving, able to look to a complex situation with many variables;

  • Proactive.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Eligibility to gain UK SC Security Clearance OR You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).
