Job Description SummaryThe Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (ME) must be capable of leading the mechanical design of assigned projects. Projects will predominantly be high speed permanent magnet alternators and other similar machines, power electronics and regulators, temperature sensors and probes, bellows and switch assemblies. The ME must have a thorough understanding of mechanical packaging principles and analyses, and will use in-house as well as commercial design software to perform thermal and structural calculations for both static and dynamic performance. The ME will coordinate and interact closely with other design functions including Electrical and Electromagnetic Design, Design/Drafting, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical design analyses and calculations, including thermal and structural using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools
  • Meeting all project deliverables and schedule deadlines
  • Prepare design & analysis reports and present to large groups of people
  • Review drawings and have a good understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Review all design results to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Develop and implement standard design practices from lessons learned
  • Lead new materials selection and development efforts to provide state-of-the-art technological advantages
  • Interpret and clarify customer technical expectations
  • Work with the Development Team to meet internal unit cost and develop cost targets
  • Define and maintain technical compliance to customer requirements
  • Write technical proposals and present technical information to customers
  • Provide direct support to manufacturing and assist in process development and control, improvement efforts, failure analysis, and problem solving
  • Perform Integrated Logistic & Support analysis, including Reliability, Maintainability, and System Safety
  • Internal research & development
  • Lead cost reduction efforts and track progress
  • Resolution of field issues
  • Ability to travel on a roughly quarterly basis to support customers or internal development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 7 years of experience in Analysis or Design)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Analysis and/or Design

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience in the aerospace industry
  • 5 years of experience in Mechanical Analysis or Mechanical Design
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Bachelor or Science in Aerospace Engineering.
  • Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or Adjacent Sciences.
  • Experience with software tools such as ANSYS, NX, CFX, MathCAD, Microsoft products
  • Previous experience in an Aerospace engineering environment
  • Prior experience with turbomachinery, computational fluid dynamics and/or pump design
  • Ability to use statistical tools for design and testing
  • Background in rotating machine design and development
  • Experience in Total Air Temperature (TAT), Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), Resistive Temperature Detector (RTD) and Thermocouple (TC) design, packaging principles, and analyses functions
  • Ability to influence and seamlessly work cross-functionally in a matrix organization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Able to communicate with all levels of internal and external customer organizations, including upper management

The base pay range for this position is $90,800.00 - $151,300.00.  The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan.
