Job Description SummaryAs an Environmental Data Scientist you will have the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team to analyze data and develop models to understand and quantify aviation’s impact on climate from both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. As part of a major engine manufacturing company, you will have the opportunity to be part of a global effort in mitigating aviation’s contribution towards global warming. This will involve working on projects with fellow researchers across disciplines and domains. It will also include the opportunity to work on government sponsored, cutting-edge research programs with GE’s external partners in academia and government.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work independently as well as in a team to develop and deliver solutions to assess environmental impacts of aviation industry including CO2, Contrails, and NOx. This will include AI/ML modeling, aircraft plume modeling, simulation, optimization, and advanced data analytics and visualization techniques.
  • Leverage deep learning-based image analytics techniques (using satellite/ground-based observations) to build contrail prediction and validation models.
  • Leverage numerical weather prediction models to forecast meteorological parameters at cruise altitude.
  • Conduct research on sustainable aviation fuels and energy efficient technologies.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate environmental considerations and emissions models into aircraft design and operations.
  • Analyze data on environmental trends, advise on compliance with environmental regulations and develop mitigation techniques.
  • Contribute to the development of eco-friendly aviation policies.
  • Contribute to development and writing of internal and external proposals.
  • Patent your inventions and develop a record of publication via conferences and peer reviewed journals.
  • Clearly and professionally communicate progress and results of your research with the team, business leaders, customers, and technology providers.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or closely related field or MS degree in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Environmental Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or closely related field with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in an industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of environmental issues related to aviation.
  • Demonstrated capability to configure analytical workflows that orchestrate data and analytical modules such as simulation and optimization applications.
  • Demonstrated development skills and documentation capability in at least one of the following: Java, C/C++/Fortran, Python, R, etc.
  • Demonstrated hands-on analytical software development skills for conceiving solutions and implementing algorithms for aviation’s climate solutions.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Master’s level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with physics-based contrail models – CoCiP and APCEMM.
  • Familiarity with Atmospheric Science and energy balance in the atmosphere
  • Familiarity with global circulation models (GCM).
  • Demonstrated capability to rapidly develop and deploy deep learning based image analytics models.
  • Demonstrated capability in developing and deploying numerical weather prediction models Experience with acquiring, cleaning, and organizing large data using data sciences techniques and multi-core parallel or high-performance computing infrastructures.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau/Spotfire.
  • Ability to connect learning from past academic environment to industrial research environment. Strong desire to solve complex, real world problems with ability to develop and validate solutions to narrowly defined technical challenges.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic, fast paced, outcome-focused industrial research environment.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal guidance.

The base pay range for this position is 80,000 - 150,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on April 16, 2024
